A big one. I never thought I would be a scientist – I always liked animals and writing stories, but at some point I discovered that science gave me a different kind of fulfilment – certainly a more fast paced one day to day (it takes a very long time and a lot of dedication to write a novel… I can do an experiment in half an hour). I also loved the fact that I could use my body and mind and that it was, unlike all the myths, very creative. Science has given me a sense of direction and ideas for the future that I never had when I was in school. It’s influenced what fun things I’ve tried, like climbing, and who I know and who I’ve married! It has influenced my belief system and my sense of identity. It has given me confidence I definitely didn’t have before.

I has influenced my career choices mostly…I love to learn and was always interested in science so it meant I chose to study it, then I got really good at it so I chose to do it as a job.
Apart from my career, science helps me make choices in everything I do…from what medicines to take, how to be more environmentally conscious, general appreciation of the world around me and even how to keep fizzy water fizzy for longer. Science is a major part of my day to day life. Without it I wouldn’t be me.

A huge one, my career and whole working life have involved science, and I’m sure it has a been a pretty big influence even before this, from the choices of A level subjects and GCSEs to what news I believe or even what I clean my oven with!
I would be a very different person without it and probably wouldn’t have developed the strength and determination I have today without it.
