What I really ezpected was for the machine to make a funny noise and Amber, the scientist in charge of it, to leap on the emergency shut down button before the machine melted. This might have happened if we had aligned the ring wrong and the x-rays hit the metal, heating it up. Maybe I expected the worse: it all worked perfectly, giving me the beautiful pattern I had hoped for.
I really would love to see Amber do anything less than perfect and have to leap for the stop button – oh I could imagine how upset she would get at that! She’s the best crystallographer I know 🙂
@Kate, she is really fantastic. I should have had more faith, but she did talk me though everything that could go wrong… my mind was spinning with disaster scenarios.

At least it all worked out! Do you think similar materials would have the same reaction? And would you test them? 🙂

Yes – similar materials react similarly – or do you mean give similar patterns? They would give similar patterns too!
