We need the ‘standby’ time so our brains can remain healthy and process all the junk that goes in gets filtered into temporary storage until it gets chance to sort it out into useful and rubbish. If we don’t sleep then it causes us to not function correctly, because our brains are full of the junk and trying to sort it while we are trying to concentrate on something else.

Sleeping refuels us just like eating. It’s important we sleep to learn. This is when all the short term memories get processed and put away so people who suffer from sleeping disorders are very forgetful and seem to snap in and out of reality. If you don’t sleep you can also start seeing things because your brain doesn’t know how to process all the signals it’s receiving.
