Hi Simon. Great question…thank you 🙂
Basically I looked at Universities I wanted to go to based on their research and reputation. I checked the titles and descriptions of the projects and whittled it down to 10 that I was really interested in. I applied for them all (just like you would a job) and I heard back from 5. I was invited for interview but decided I definitely wanted to be part of the research at the OU because it was chemistry but it involved lots of other areas that I have been interested in since I was a child (I get to hold and examine meteorites from space!! My mind is blown everyday about that!!! LOL). You another consideration though is to make sure you like the place you are going to. You don’t want to live somewhere horrible while doing a PhD for three years. You need to be happy! Luckily I really like Milton Keynes.
I hope that answers your question. 🙂
