We work together a lot of the time so getting close and trusting your colleagues is important. Tonight my research group are all going out to dinner together 😉

I was close with my colleagues when I was doing my PhD, yes. We used to go out for dinner as a group quite often, and last christmas we all went go-karting together. Now I’ve moved to a new University, and I have only been here for 2 weeks, but I already feel quite close to people in the new group. I think when you work hard trying to solve problems along side people you get quite close and you look out for each other. There are also may lab tasks that have to be carried out during the week, that require multiple people to work together.

Most of them, sometimes a bit too close – I do have a few ex-partners in the groups I have worked in 😉 one of the people I work with lived with me last year, and the whole group will randomly turn up on my doorstep order a takeaway and have a sleepover if the fancy takes them. I was bridesmaid at the wedding of another one of my group last year so I would have to say yes. Not all groups are as close as this one, but Durham is a very friendly place overall.
