It’s a common error to call it a ‘stigmatism’ as it’s actuall called an ‘astigmatism’ It’s an optical defect where the vision is blurred because the optics of the eye can’t focus the image of an object on the retina. It can be caused by an irregular curvature of the cornea or lens.

I have astigmatism in my left eye. It’s where the whole eyeball is slightly flattened or the cornea is a bit bent. This can be something you’re born with or something you get from damaging your eye. If you are born with a very slight astigmatism it can get worse over the years (possibly because your eyes get bigger) as though it’s been exaggerated over time. It is very annoying.
